Western Cape launches livestock vaccination program against Foot and Mouth Disease at Fisantekraal farms
TheWkly Analysis
A proactive livestock vaccination programme is underway at Fisantekraal near Durbanville in the Western Cape to prevent Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) (a highly contagious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals like cattle). This risk mitigation vaccination targets the area where several other parts of the province have already tested positive for FMD. About 450 cows were vaccinated in the initial effort. Authorities estimate about 500 000 vaccines are needed province-wide to combat the disease spread. Provincial Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Dr Ivan Meyer emphasized the livestock industry's significance in the province. He noted big dairy farmers within a 3km radius of Fisantekraal and the urgency to protect this key sub-sector by working closely with Agri Weste.
