Tanzania supports establishment of Nile Basin Commission at AU summit meeting
TheWkly Analysis
Tanzania has called for stronger institutional cooperation and sustainable management of the Nile River. Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, made the call during a High-Level Nile Basin Meeting. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the African Union Heads of State Summit in Addis Ababa. The summit was themed “Assuring sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve the goals of Agenda 2063.” Ambassador Kombo addressed ministers and representatives from Nile Basin countries. He stressed reinforcing governance structures for equitable and balanced utilisation of shared water resources. Tanzania welcomes and fully supports the establishment of the Nile Basin Commission (a proposed permanent institution for Nile Basin countries to coordinate water resource management). He noted that strong and permanent institutional frameworks would improve coordination, deepen trust and provide a structured mechanism.
- Farmers in Nile-dependent regions of Tanzania gain better-coordinated water access for irrigation, boosting crop yields and food security for millions.
- Residents in downstream Egypt and Sudan benefit from structured dispute mechanisms, reducing flood and drought risks affecting daily water supply for urban populations.
- Pastoral communities across East Africa experience improved sanitation systems, lowering disease outbreaks and enhancing health for vulnerable nomadic groups.
