Milan and Cortina race to finish Olympic venues
TheWkly Analysis
By this time next month, the Winter Olympics will be underway. But behind the scenes, it’s a “race against time” for Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, the host cities for this year’s Olympic Games. The biggest concerns are safety, transportation, and crowd logistics. That’s because some sites are still unfinished, putting them behind schedule. And it’s not just small stuff. For example, the ice hockey arena in Milan has been plagued with delays. It was set to host Team USA, but after players questioned if the construction would be complete in time, organizers had to do some damage control. Most recently, Reuters reported that the arena had improved after some quick fixes ahead of test events. But many things still need to be completed before it’s game time. But it’s a different story in Cortina. Despite some construction delays, most facilities are close to done. Instead, the biggest issues are about whether future Olympics could be hampered by climate change. Because the Winter Games could generate more “climate tourism,” creating strain on local populations. Having concerns now might seem early, but remember...the 2026 Winter Olympics will also be hosted in Italy.
