IPID Investigator Says Police Wrongly Classified Mbense Murder as Inquest
TheWkly Analysis
Independent Police Investigative Directorate investigator Nomsa Masuku told the Madlanga Commission that it was wrong for the Police to register Emmanuel Mbense’s murder as an inquest. Mbense was tortured and killed in Brakpan in April 2022, allegedly by members of the police. His body was later dumped in a dam at Nigel, east of Johannesburg. Masuku noted that it was evident Mbense was killed due to injuries around his head, as blood indicated trauma. The Police interviewed witnesses and found the deceased with injuries but still proceeded to register it as an inquest.
- Families of victims like Mbense's may experience prolonged distress due to delayed justice from misclassified investigations.
- Police officers involved could face internal reviews and potential disciplinary actions, altering their career prospects.
- Communities in Gauteng province might lose further trust in law enforcement, leading to increased reluctance to report crimes.
