EMPD officials and civilian accused of stealing R14 million in precious stones
TheWkly Analysis
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry heard allegations that Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) officials together with a civilian stole precious stones valued at R14 million. Images presented at the Commission showed Aiden McKenzie and Kersha Lee Stols from EMPD and Etienne van Der Walt, a civilian, at the complainant's residential premises. Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) assistant director Thulani Magagula informed the Commission that the officers and civilian operated outside their jurisdiction. A case of corruption and impersonating a police officer was opened as a result. Magagula stated that the members claimed to have seized the articles and handed them to JMPD officers, but there is no proof they were booked on the SAPS-13 register.
