‘Dumbo’ Deep-Sea Discovery: New Octopus Species Surfaces
Off Australia’s Coast: Marine biologists have identified a new species of “dumbo octopus,” famed for ear-like fins reminiscent of the Disney elephant character. Found over 3,400 feet below the surface, this “flapjack”-type octopus can flatten itself along the seafloor or expand upward like an umbrella. Researchers confirm it thrives in low-light conditions, feeding on tiny crustaceans. The discovery underscores how unexplored deep-sea regions remain.
