Smartphone Overuse Linked to Declining Teen Mental Health
Leipzig, Germany: A longitudinal study involving roughly 700 adolescents found that heavier smartphone use correlated with lower life satisfaction and increased mental stress. Conducted from 2018 to 2024, researchers noticed a spike in daily phone screen time—particularly after the pandemic began—that remained high even as lockdowns eased. Girls were especially prone to emotional distress related to Problematic Smartphone Use (PSU). Scientists caution that while it’s unclear if phone addiction causes unhappiness or vice versa, moderation strategies appear critical. Many in this cohort spent three or more hours on their phones daily, fueling concerns about lost social skills and potential impacts on cognition.
